Some members were active prior to joining GENBLUE: Ayeon was a member of the pre-debut girl group Root Sixteen which never debuted. She later went on to become a member of Blue Fox in 2020, but the group disbanded in 2022. XXIN participated on the Chinese survival show Youth With You 2 in 2020, but was eliminated in the ninth episode ranking in the 64th-107th bracket.
Yuan was originally set to compete on the Taiwanese reality show Dancing Diamond 52 but did not meet the age requirement. GENBLUE was formed with a nine-member lineup through the reality survival show NEXT GIRLZ, which first aired on July 29, 2023. The group placed first overall, winning 6 out of 9 rounds.
Later, on November 17, the group released their first special commemorative album For You, featuring songs they performed on the show. On April 9, 2024, it was announced that the group would be undergoing a series of training and exams to determine the final line-up. Three days later, on April 12, it was revealed that Rong Rong and Vicky had been removed from the group.
It was also announced that Bido had decided to leave the group on her own terms. Initially, GENBLUE planned to debut in Korea around May. However, on August 26, 2024, it was announced that the group's debut date had been changed to September 2.
The group officially debuted in both China and South Korea with the digital single "Cococo". On January 18, 2025, GENBLUE held their first fan concert at National Taiwan University Stadium. On February 14, it was announced that the group would be releasing an EP titled Act Like That on March 6.
On April 28, GENBLUE opened a countdown for the premiere of "Oh! (Chinese Version)"'s music video. The following day, the digital single and music video were released simultaneously.
On August 25, it was announced that the group would be releasing an EP titled Mirror on September 22.
