On May 31, 2016, YG Entertainment began releasing individual teaser photos of the members for the agency's then-unnamed, upcoming girl group on Instagram, starting with Jennie the same day. This was followed by Lisa on June 7, Jisoo on June 14, and lastly Rosé on June 21. On June 29, YGE released photos of the group's members together and revealed their name to be BLACKPINK.

On July 29, it was revealed that the group will debut on August 8. The tracks "Boombayah" and "Whistle" from their debut single album "Square One", were revealed on August 5 and 6, respectively.
On August 21, BLACKPINK won their first music show award on Inkigayo, only 13 days after their debut. This makes them one of the fastest artists to win. On October 19, 2016, YG Entertainment released a poster announcing the group's first comeback with their second single album, "Square Two", for November 1.
The single's title tracks, "Playing With Fire" and "Stay", were revealed on October 25 and 27, respectively. The group performing at SBS Gayodaejun on December 25, 2017 On January 17, 2017, the group announced their official fandom name to be "BLINK", formed by combining the terms "Black" and "Pink". On May 14, YG Entertainment officials confirmed that BLACKPINK were working toward for a comeback in June.
Two days later, news reports indicate the occurrence of group's first showcase at Nippon Budokan on July 20 and Japanese debut. On June 5, it was revealed that they would be filming the music video for the new single that week. On the same day, the agency's CEO released photos of the members on location filming.
On June 6, it was announced that the song would be released between 15th and 20th. On June 13, 2017, the agency revealed a teaser for the new single, confirmed for release on June 22. Six days later, the single's name, "As If It's Your Last", was revealed.
On July 13, BLACKPINK announced that they will be releasing their self-titled Japanese mini album on August 30, 2017. On January 30, 2018, the group announced the release of their first repackage album, titled Re: BLACKPINK on March 28. On April 24, 2018, YG Entertainment stated that BLACKPINK would release new music by the end of this year.
On May 17, it was confirmed that the group would make a comeback in June. An official news report revealed that the mini album would be released on June 15. On June 1st, through an moving poster, it was announced that the group would release their first mini album, Square Up, on June 15 with "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" as the title track.

On September 12, it was announced that the group would hold their first concert in Seoul titled BLACKPINK 2018 Tour (In Your Area) Seoul x BC Card at Olympic Gymnastics Arena. Later in the month, English singer Dua Lipa collaborated with BLACKPINK with the song "Kiss and Make Up", as part of the complete edition of her self-titled debut album, which released on October 19, 2018.
On November 22, the group announced that their first Japanese studio album, BLACKPINK In Your Area, was made available digitally on November 23 and physically on December 5. BLACKPINK performing at Coachella on April 9, 2019 On March 25, YGE released a teaser photo of Lisa, confirming the group's upcoming EP Kill This Love, which would be releasing on April 5. Photos of the other members, Jennie, Jisoo, and Rosé, and a photo of the whole group were released, respectively, from March 26 to 28.
