He debuted as a member of ROMEO on May 7, 2015 with the group's first EP The ROMEO. In October 2017, Hyunkyung, along with Yunsung, Kyle, and Milo, became contestants on the survival show MIXNINE. Hyunkyung was eliminated in episode 14 after ranking 17th place.
In January 2023, it was confirmed that ROMEO (with four members: Hyunkyung, Seunghwan, Kyle, and Kangmin) will partake on JTBC's Peak Time. The group was eliminated in the second episode. On December 4, 2023, Kim Hyun Jong was revealed as a new member of the boy group KNK.
