On June 1, 2023, and Belift Lab announced a new survival program, titled R U Next? , which aims to create Belift Lab's next global girl group. The show's main posters and teaser video were released on June 7, followed by the profiles of all 22 contestants on June 16.
Pre-debut profile photo of ILLIT's original six member lineup R U Next? aired for 10 episodes from June 30, 2023 until the live finale on September 1, 2023. During the finale's broadcast, six contestants were chosen for the debuting lineup of the show's product group, I'LL-IT.
Amongst these contestants, two were chosen by the show's viewers and four were chosen by Belift Lab. The final lineup consisted of: Wonhee (ranked first overall), Youngseo (ranked second), Minju (ranked third), Iroha (ranked fourth), Moka (ranked sixth), and Yunah (ranked fifth but was announced sixth). Also on September 1, the group's SNS accounts were launched, and it was announced that I'LL-IT would debut in 2024.
On September 8, the profile photos of the six members of I'LL-IT were revealed. On January 5, 2024, Belift Lab announced that member Youngseo would be leaving the group and agency, following a mutual agreement to terminate her contract. On February 13, 2024, local news outlet Xsportsnews reported that I'LL-IT was preparing to make their official debut in March.
Later that day, Belift Lab confirmed the reports. On February 21, it was announced that ILLIT's debut mini album would be released on March 25. Through a logo teaser released on February 26, I'LL-IT announced their group name would be stylized as ILLIT moving forward.
Promotional photo for [[Super Real Me]] ILLIT's debut mini album, Super Real Me, along with its title track "Magnetic", was released on March 25, 2024. According to Hanteo Chart, Super Real Me sold 380,056 copies in its first week, breaking the then-record for the highest first-week sales of a girl group's debut album. The mini album was later certified Platinum by the Korean Music Contents Association (KMCA) for 250,000 copies sold.
Meanwhile, the album's title track "Magnetic" helped ILLIT become the first-ever K-pop group to enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a debut song, as it debuted at #91. On April 2, the group achieved their first-ever music show win on The Show for "Magnetic". On April 21, ILLIT announced their official fandom name would be LILLY (릴리즈).
The name refers to the unchanging love between group and their fans. However, following backlash from fans due to the name's similarities to other names in the K-Pop industry, Belift Lab announced a new fandom name would be chosen sometime in the future. ILLIT's new fandom name, GLLIT (글릿), was formally announced on September 1, 2024.
According to Belift Lab, 'GLLIT' was inspired by the English word "glitter", which means to sparkle and shine. The name means in ILLIT's eyes, their fans shine brightest. Moreover, the fans make ILLIT sparkle.
Promotional photo for [[I'll Like You]] On September 10, according to a music industry insider, ILLIT was preparing for their first-ever comeback, of which was scheduled to be released in early October. Weeks later, on September 23, Belift Lab announced the group's second mini album, I'll Like You, would be released on October 21. On this day, the mini album, along with its title track "Cherish (My Love)", were released.
I'll Like You was eventually certified Platinum by the KMCA for selling 250,000 copies via Circle Chart. A promotional B-side from the album, "Tick-Tack", was later released in English under the title "Baby It's Both (Tick-Tack English Ver. )" with a feature from American singer on November 22.
Through ILLIT's official Japanese website, on January 10, 2025, it was announced that the group would released their first Japanese digital single. The digital single, titled "Almond Chocolate", was later released on February 14, followed up by the Korean version of the son...
