Prior to their debut, it was reported that former Baby V. O. X.
member Kan Miyoun would be producing a new girl group. However, this was later clarified as having been incorrect, Kan Miyoun was simply advising the members during the debut process. On October 11, 2017, Hashtag made their debut with the mini album The Girl Next Door.
On April 4, 2019, LUK Factory announced the group would make their first comeback with the mini album #Aeji #paSsion on April 16 after nearly two years of inactivity. On October 1, they released their first digital single "My Style". On December 1, 2022, LUK Factory announced that the group would make their comeback with a new mini album in March 2023, nearly four years since their last release.
It was also mentioned that Hyunji would become the leader henceforth. On December 28, they signed a contract with Wannabe Entertainment for management and training, but it is unknown if they are still under LUK Factory or managed by both companies. In addition, their comeback has also been pushed back to April 2023.
On March 21, 2023, it was announced that Dajeong and Aeji had been expelled from the group. The two members revealed that they had no prior knowledge to their departure and that it was solely decided by their agency. LUK Factory would also announce that Hashtag's comeback had been pushed back to the end of May 2023.
On May 31, it was announced that they will release the digital single "Diamond" on June 12. However, the release was postponed to June 9, 2023 due to miscommunication with distributors. On October 12, 2024, it was announced that Hashtag had disbanded after their contracts with LUK Factory expired.
