On March 9, 2021, Sports Kyunghyang reported that MBC was preparing a new global audition show with PD Han Dong Chul, who had previously worked on shows like Show Me the Money, Unpretty Rapstar, Produce 101, and Sixteen. On June 1, the first video teaser was released. Public recruitments were held from June 1 to 30, for any female born in 2010 or earlier.
A prequel season titled 등교 전 망설임 (lit. Hesitation Before Going to School) began airing on September 14. The same day, the official contestant profiles were released.
My Teenage Girl premiered on November 28, while the live finale was broadcasted on February 27, 2022, with the girls who ranked in the top nine to debut in the show's product group CLASSy. During the finale, seven different contestants were revealed to make their debut; Jimin ranked first overall, Seonyou ranked second overall, Hyungseo ranked third, Hyeju ranked fourth, Riwon ranked fifth, Boeun ranked sixth, and finally, Chaewon ranked seventh overall. On April 16, it was announced that the group would release their debut mini album sometime in May. The next day, CLASS:y revealed the timetable and object poster for their upcoming first mini album (Y) Class Is Over, set to be released on May 5. On May 15, the group released the album packaging for Lives Across, set to be released on May 26.
Labelled as "1st mini album Z", it is an immediate continuation of Class Is Over. The title 'Lives Across' is an anagram of 'Class Is Over', indicating two albums existing in the same storyline. Five days later, they announced they would make their Japanese debut with the single "Shut Down -JP Ver.
-" on June 22. The group at Inkigayo phtowall on November 6, 2022 On September 20, a teaser for an upcoming comeback for October was released by media outlets. On September 30, a teaser was posted on their company's Instagram account which revealed that the group will be coming back on October 26.
Later on October 5, announced on the group's SNS that they would come back with their second mini album titled, Day & Night. On October 16, CLASS:y won singer category Female Rookie of the Year in the Asia Model Awards. On December 21, 2022, CLASS:y announced that they will release their second Japanese single "Target" on February 22, and hold their first fan concert in Japan in February 2023.
On May 5, CLASS:y released their second digital single, "My Love", to celebrate the group's first anniversary. On June 14, CLASS:y announced that they will release their first Japanese digital single "Crack-Crack-Crackle" on July 12. On December 20, CLASS:y released their third digital single "Winter Bloom".
On September 29, 2024, it was reported that CLASS:y will make a comeback in November. On October 25, a teaser was revealed for their third mini album Love XX, set to be released on November 14. On November 12, M25 announced that Hyungseo would not participate in the group's upcoming album activities due to health issues.
On November 13, 2025, K-Tigers E&C announced that they would be managing CLASS:y's activities moving forward after transferring from M25. Additionally, they revealed that the group was currently working on new content including a new album. On January 9, 2026, it was reported that the group plans to make a comeback in the first half of 2026.
On February 3, it was revealed that EL CAPITXN is working with the group for their upcoming album.
