Wonho participated in the Mnet reality survival show NO. MERCY. In the last episode, he was chosen as one of the members of the new boy group of Starship Entertainment.
As a result, he debuted with MONSTA X on May 15, 2015 with mini album Trespass. On October 31, 2019, Starship announced his departure from MONSTA X as he wished to not cause trouble to the group following recent allegations surrounding him. The agency continued to take legal action against the malicious claims.
The following day, Starship announced they had terminated his contract with the agency. Following the announcement of Wonho's departure, there was a large outcry from fans who protested the decision in multiple ways, trending hashtags on Twitter for weeks and funding billboards and fan projects in various countries. On March 10, 2020, Wonho was cleared of all charges by the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and Starship announced that they would support his career in the future.
On April 10, Highline Entertainment, a subsidiary of Starship, announced that they had signed an exclusive contract with Wonho as a solo artist and a producer. On May 6, it was announced that he signed with U. S.
label Maverick Management. On June 29, Wonho announced his fandom will be called "WENEE". The single "Losing You" was pre-released on August 14.
According to Wonho, the track is a love song but is also inspired by his love for his fans, who stayed by his side even after his departure from the group. The first part of his debut mini album, Love Synonym #1 : Right for Me, was released less than a month later, on September 4. It contains both uptempo and ballad tracks.
Wonho participated in many tracks' songwriting and production, and the album carries a message that reflects his own feeling that with his fans, as long as they're together and keep going, they can overcome anything. Wonho announced on January 21, 2022 that he will comeback with his first single album "Obsession" on February 16. On May 22, Wonho announced that he will release his third mini album Facade on June 13.
On August 13, UNIVERSE released the schedule for the digital single "Don't Hesitate", which was released on August 19 as part of the UNIVERSE Music project. On September 21, a teaser was released announcing his comeback with the single album "Bittersweet", to be released on October 14. On November 11, it was announced that Wonho will be releasing his second English digital single "What Would You Do" on November 22.
On May 31, it was reported by Dispatch that Wonho would be coming back with pre-release single in June ahead of his first full-length album. On June 17, Wonho announced the pre-release single "Better Than Me", set for release on June 27. On September 29, Wonho announced his first full-length album, Syndrome, set for release on October 31.
The following day, it was announced that he will pre-release "Good Liar", on October 3.
