He debuted as a member of SHINee on May 22, 2008 with the group's first mini album Replay. He made his solo debut on December 5, 2018 with his first mini album Voice. On March 29, 2022, a teaser image was posted which revealed that Onew will be releasing his second mini album, Dice on April 11.
On February 14, 2023, Sports Seoul released a report stating that Onew would be releasing an album on March 6. Hours later, SM Entertainment confirmed the reports. On February 20, it was announced that Onew would be releasing his first full-length album, Circle, on March 6.
On March 5, 2024, it was confirmed that Onew's contract with SM Entertainment was expiring, and that he is currently exploring various options. On April 2, it was revealed that Onew had signed with newly established agency GRIFFIN Entertainment as their first artist. On April 9, it was announced that Onew would held his first fanmeeting 'Guess!
' in Japan and South Korea in May and June. On April 29, additional dates for other Asian cities were announced, making it a fanmeeting tour. On July 11, Onew released the scheduler for his third mini album Flow, scheduled for release on September 3.
"All Day" was pre-released on July 15. On December 8, Onew announced that he would be pre-releasing the single "Yay" on December 12, ahead of his fourth mini album. On December 8, 2024, Onew revealed that he would be releasing his fourth mini album Connection on January 6, 2025.
On April 7, Onew announced that he would release his second full-length album sometime in July. On June 13, Onew released a trailer video for his second full-length, Percent, which will be released on July 15. On August 18, Onew announced his second Japanese mini album Saku, set for release on October 1.
On February 2, 2026, Onew announced his fifth mini album Tough Love, scheduled for March 9.
