In April 2017, Kim Jaehwan was introduced as a contestant on Mnet's reality survival show Produce 101 Season 2 as an independent trainee. In the finale, he ranked 4th, securing his spot with project group Wanna One. The group made their debut with their first mini album 1X1=1 (To Be One) on August 7, 2017.
They later concluded their activities following the end of their contracts on December 31, 2018 before officially disbanding after their farewell concert Therefore in January 2019. He made his solo debut on May 20, 2019 with his first mini album Another. On May 31, 2024, WAKEONE announced that Kim Jaehwan renewed his contract with the agency.
