He debuted as a member of SHINee on May 22, 2008 with the group's first mini album Replay. On March 3, 2014, Key debuted as one-half of the duo Toheart, alongside INFINITE's Woohyun, with the release of their first mini album. Key made his solo debut on November 6, 2018 with his first digital single "Forever Yours", which was later featured on his first studio album Face.
On October 30, it was announced that Key would be releasing his first digital single, "Forever Yours", on November 6. On December 5, it was announced that Key would be making his Japan solo debut with his first mini album Hologram on December 21. On February 8, 2019, teaser videos were posted which revealed that Key would be releasing his second digital single, "Cold", on February 14.
On February 25, it was announced that Key would be releasing his first repackage album, I Wanna Be, on March 4. It was the sixth release of STATION season 3. On August 24, 2021, teaser photos revealed that he would be releasing his third digital single, "Hate That...
", on August 30. It was stated as the pre-release single for his upcoming album. On August 25, Taeyeon was said to be a feature artist on the single.
On September 6, it was announced through a teaser photo that Key would be releasing his first mini album, Bad Love, on September 27. On August 9, 2022, it was revealed that he would be releasing his second full length album, Gasoline, on August 30. On January 25, 2023, a logo clip was posted which announced that he would be releasing his second repackaged album, Gasoline, on February 13.
On March 23, Mnet revealed that Key was selected as the fifth star master for their competition show, Boys Planet. On July 18, it was announced that Key would be joining the cast for TVING's variety show, Crime Scene Returns. It was set to be released in the first half of 2024.
On August 17, Sports Chosun reported that Key would be having a comeback in September. On August 21, it was announced that Key would be releasing his second mini album, Good & Great, on September 11. On May 8, 2024, SM Entertainment announced that Key would be releasing a mini album and a Japanese single in the third quarter of the year.
On May 28, it was announced through SHINee's Japanese website that Key would be releasing his first Japanese single "Tongue Tied" on August 7. Through the first series of teasers, the single was revealed to be released digitally on June 26. On September 2, it was announced that Key would be releasing his third mini album Pleasure Shop on September 23.
On May 7, 2025, SM Entertainment shared plans for Key's third full-length album, coming out in the third quarter of 2025. On July 21, Key released a teaser for Hunter, set for release on August 11.
