In April 2017, Kang Daniel was revealed to be a contestant in the reality survival show Produce 101 Season 2 representing MMO Entertainment. In the finale, he finished in 1st place and subsequently became the center of Wanna One. Wanna One debuted on August 7, 2017 with 1X1=1 (To Be One).
The group released their final album 1¹¹=1 (Power of Destiny) on November 19, 2018 and concluded activities on December 31. On January 21, 2019, through a live broadcast on Instagram, Kang Daniel shared that he might be debuting in April. Following Wanna One's disbandment on February 1, Daniel transferred from MMO to LM Entertainment and opened various SNS accounts.

LM Entertainment explained that it was a request to modify clauses in the contract and not to terminate it. On March 21, he applied for the suspension of his exclusive contract with LM Entertainment because the agency signed joint business contracts that sell his exclusive contract rights to third parties without his consent. The agency met with music distributor Kakao M on June 20. LM decided to appeal to the Seoul High Court on July 17. On September 27, LM Entertainment's objection to the injunction was confirmed to have been canceled. On November 15, KONNECT Entertainment announced that Kang Daniel would be releasing his first digital single, "Touchin'", on November 25.

On March 9, he announced that he will be returning on March 24 with his first mini album Cyan. On March 17, it was announced that Kang Daniel and Zico will be participating in the 2020 Pepsi X Global K-pop Project.
The digital single "For The Love of Korea" was released on April 23. On July 1, Sports DongA reported that Kang Daniel plans to release a new song featuring Simon Dominic on July 25 to celebrate the first anniversary of his solo debut. On July 5, Kang Daniel released a teaser for his second mini album Magenta scheduled for release on August 3, with the pre-release single "Waves" being released on July 27.
