Prior to joining MBK Entertainment, Soyeon was a trainee under SM Entertainment. Originally meant to debut as the leader of Girls' Generation, she left the company in February 2007 due to personal circumstances. She debuted as a member of T-ARA on July 29, 2009 with the group's first single "Lie".
Under the group's rotating leadership system, Soyeon held the role from December 7, 2011 to July 13, 2013, in which the role was then passed on to Qri. On June 26, 2013, she debuted as a member of the group's sub unit T-ARA QBS with the single "Like A Wind". On March 6, 2017, MBK Entertainment announced T-ARA was planning to release their final album as a six-member group before the expiration of Soyeon and Boram's contracts.
However, on May 6, it was announced the group would continue as a four-member group as Soyeon and Boram's contracts had already expired. Soyeon's final performance as a member of T-ARA took place on May 13 at a concert in Taiwan. On July 11, it was announced that Soyeon has signed an exclusive contract with Think Entertainment.
On August 25, her agency revealed that she would be make her solo debut in October. On September 3, 2020, Soyeon was announced as a participant in the MBN variety show Miss Back, which will follow "a group of female singers who made their debut in idol groups but are slowly being forgotten in the minds of the public. " The show premiered on October 8th, 2020.
. However, in the 3rd episode, she announced she would be leaving the show early because she "didn’t want to compete with them and take this kind of opportunity away from them when they were struggling. ” Further news about her solo debut was not made during 2020.
However, on February 5, 2021, she made her solo debut with the digital single "They Are All The Same". She proceeded to release her second digital single, "Interview", on March 24th, 2021.
