During her second year of middle school, she fell in love with music and the stage when she performed on stage for the school festival. That was when her friends suggested her to audition and she decided to become a singer. She debuted as a member of Red Velvet on August 1, 2014 with the group's first digital single "Happiness".
In June 2015, Joy became part of the cast of the fourth season of the MBC show, We Got Married, and was partnered with BTOB member Yook Sungjae. They released a collaborated single, "Young Love", on April 16, 2015. Joy and Yook Sungjae left the show in May 2016 and became the longest-running couple that the show has ever had.
They went on to win the New Star Award and Best Couple at the MBC Entertainment Awards. In 2017, she made her acting debut as the female lead on the tvN drama The Liar and His Lover. For her performance in the drama, she won the Newcomer Award at the OSEN Cable TV Awards.
In July 2017, Joy appeared on King of Mask Singer where she won her first round of the singing competition program and performed under the alias of Bandabi. Joy joined as an MC for the second season of JTBC's Two Yoo Project Sugar Man, which began airing in January 2018. In 2018, she played the main female lead in the MBC drama, Tempted, which aired from March to May.
For her performance on Tempted, she was nominated for Best Actress and Rookie of the Year at the MBC Drama Awards. In July 2018, Joy became one of the MC's on Lifetime's new show, Pajama Friends. Six months later, it was announced that Joy was picked to be one of the main MC's, alongside Jang Yoon-ju, for OnStyle's beauty variety show, Get It Beauty.
In December, Joy joined the SBS basketball variety show, Handsome Tigers, where she was the manager of the basketball team. On June 6, Joy made her first appearance on the SBS variety show TV Animal Farm and was introduced as the new MC. On May 12, 2021, Star News reported that Joy would be releasing her first solo album at the end of the month.
Her agency, SM, confirmed that she is working on a remake album and that a detailed schedule will be announced soon. On May 17, it was announced that Joy would be releasing her debut special album, Hello, on May 31. Joy made her acting return on December 20 in the JTBC drama, The One and Only.
On May 26, it was reported that Joy will be playing a role in KakaoTV's web drama, Once Upon A Small Town, as Ahn Ja Young. The drama is set to air in the second half of 2022. On April 26, the production team for Animal Farm revealed that Joy was absent for the TV recording and that there is a possibility of her leaving the show because of her health condition.
On June 20, SM Entertainment revealed that Joy will be resuming her role as MC on Animal Farm on June 21. On September 21, 2024, Star News reported that Joy would be leaving SM Entertainment as her contract with them is set to expire soon. However, SM later stated that both parties are still in discussion.
On January 14, 2025, SM Entertainment announced that Joy had renewed her contract with the agency. On May 7, SM Entertainment released the plans for Q3 and Q4 of the year, and it was revealed that Joy would be releasing her first mini album in the third quarter of the year. On July 28, a teaser was released announcing that Joy would be releasing her first mini album, From Joy, With Love, on August 18.
