On July 9, 2010, Hyeri, then known as Ji In, debuted as a member of Girl's Day with their first digital mini album Girl's Day Party 1. However, two months after their debut on September 13, she, along with fellow member Jisun, decided to leave the group, with Ji In to pursue an acting career. On December 26, 2012, Ji In, along with former Girl's Day member Jihae, released the duet song "사랑하는 날" (lit.
Loving Day) through YouTube. In 2013, she was revealed as the bassist and main vocalist of the female band Bebop. They released the collaboration single "Maem Maem" with Humming Urban Stereo on August 23, 2013 before officially debuting with their first mini album Between Calm and Passion on February 14, 2014.
On October 18, 2015, she announced her departure from the band due to health problems. On March 20, 2018, she released her first Chinese solo single, "Really Like You". Ji In later appeared on the April 6, 2018 episode of Mnet's music game show, I Can See Your Voice 5, performing "Why Don't You Know" by Chung Ha.
It was revealed that she took numerous part-time jobs following her departure from Girl's Day but was still pursuing a career in acting as well as singing. Following her appearance, it was announced that she had signed a contract with Will Entertainment. On September 5, 2019, she released her first Korean solo single "난".
On July 27, 2020, Big Daddy Entertainment announced that they had signed an exclusive contract with Hyeri. On August 6, she made her official debut as a trot singer under the stage name Jang Hyeri with the release of the single "서방님". In an interview with OSEN, Hyeri explained that she changed her stage name as she wanted to make a fresh start with her new career as a trot singer.
The name was also given to her by the CEO of her current agency as it was the first name he chose and thought it suited her.
