Hyoyeon's formal dance training began in elementary school; she learned hip hop, jazz, and Latin dance at her neighborhood's hip-hop school. She auditioned for SM Entertainment at the age of 11 through SM's 2000 Casting System. In 2004, she, alongside SUPER JUNIOR's Siwon, were sent to Beijing to study Chinese.
Before debuting with Girls' Generation, she worked with Janet Jackson and was BoA's silhouette dancer during a performance at Mnet Km Music Video Festival 2005. Hyoyeon debuted as a member of Girls' Generation on August 5, 2007 with the group's first single "Into the New World". In April 2012, she became a contestant on the dance competition show Dancing with the Stars.
She and her partner, Kim Hyun-suk, finished the show in 2nd place. She made her solo debut on December 2, 2016 with the digital single "Mystery". On April 4, 2018, SM Entertainment announced Hyoyeon would be making her debut as a DJ using the stage name HYO.
Her first single as a DJ, "Sober", was released on April 18. On September 5, she debuted as a member of Girls' Generation's second sub-unit Girls' Generation-Oh! GG with the release of their single "Lil' Touch".
On May 2, 2022, a teaser image was posted which revealed that she will be releasing her first mini album, Deep, on May 16. On August 2, 2023, E Daily reported that Hyoyeon will be having a comeback in August. Later in the day, SM confirmed the reports.
On August 16, a teaser image was posted which revealed that she will be releasing her seventh digital single, "Picture", on August 22. On February 8, 2024, SM Entertaiment revealed that Hyoyeon will be releasing a single in the second half of the year. On May 8, SM Entertainment announced that the single will be released in the third quarter of the year.
On August 23, a teaser image was posted which revealed that she will be releasing her first English digital single, "Retro Romance", on September 26. On May 7, SM Entertainment released their plans for Q2 and Q3, and it was revealed that Hyoyeon was going to release a single in the third quarter of the year. On July 9, the digital single "Yes" was announced to be released on July 16.
On November 5, 2025, SM Entertainment announced Hyoyeon will be releasing a single in the first quarter of 2026. On March 19, it was announced that the ninth single album "Moveurbody" will be released on March 23, 2026.
