She debuted as a member of Stellar on August 28, 2011 with the group's first single "Rocket Girl". Following Lee Seul's departure from the group in January 2012, Gayoung was appointed as the group's new leader. On August 23, 2017, The Entertainment Pascal announced she would be leaving Stellar after seven years of activities following the expiration of her contract.
On October 1, 2019, Inyeon Entertainment announced that Gayoung had signed on with the agency in order to pursue acting. On September 3, 2020, Gayoung was announced as a participant in the MBN variety show Miss Back, which followed "a group of female singers who made their debut in idol groups but are slowly being forgotten in the minds of the public. " The show's first episode premiered on October 8.
On March 5, 2024, she made her solo debut with the digital single "A Drink".
