While attending high school, Asura won first place on the MBC Radio show "Starry Night Show Off Contest". In this segment, where participants sang along to a phone accompaniment, Asura surprised the broadcast staff with an R&B-style rendition of "Yesterday". In 2000, she won the Mnet Music Festival with her rendition of 's "I'll Always Love You".
The same year, she wrote and sang multiple OSTs for movies and shows. In June 2002, she made her debut with the duo Atoum-ra with their self-titled album Atoum-ra Net. She participated on their album in writing and composing.
The group would disband the same year for unknown reasons. On July 5, 2003, she made her debut with the duo Hephzibah under the stage name Angie. They would release the album Dance!
Dance! Dance... before their disbandment that same year.
On July 25, 2007, she made her debut as a soloist with the album Girl作 under the stage name Asura. A repackage version of the same album titled Girl作 (Repackage) was later released on October 4.
