He was introduced as a contestant of Be the One, an audition project for soldiers of the . Jeong won an Excellence Award in the project's final round, held in late September 2012, while serving in the military. On October 10, 2013, A&G Modes revealed that Tenny would be a member of an upcoming vocal group named Timber, which would consist of two other members.

He made his debut as a member of Timber on October 18, 2013, with the group's first digital single "Three Days... ".
