On May 25, 2008, he debuted as a member of SHINee with the group's first mini album Replay. He was the first SHINee member to make his debut as a solo artist on August 18, 2014 with his first mini album Ace. On August 4, 2019, he was revealed as a member of the supergroup SuperM.
The group debuted on October 4 with their self-titled mini album. On March 5, 2024, it was announced that Taemin's contract with SM Entertainment will be expiring in March. It was reported that he will not renew and may be signing with BPM Entertainment to manage his solo activities.
In response, BPM stated that nothing has been decided as of yet. The next day, Taemin personally announced that he is leaving SM Entertainment. On April 1, BPM Entertainment officially announced that they had signed an exclusive contract with Taemin.
On the last date of the 2024 Taemin Fanmeeting [Never-Never], it was revealed that Taemin will release his fifth mini album in August before going on a world tour. On July 29, he released a teaser for Eternal, set for release on August 19. On September 5, 2025, Taemin announced his first special digital single "Veil", scheduled for September 13.
On February 24, 2026, BPM Entertainment announced their exclusive contract with Taemin had come to an end after two years. On March 11, Galaxy Corporation announced they signed an exclusive contract with Taemin. On March 26, it was announced that Taemin will be releasing the English digital single "Long Way Home" on March 27.
