The group first performed in Japan on December 11, 2015. The group had consisted of 11 members at that time. In May to July 2016, the SF9 members participated in the FNC survival show d.
o. b (Dance or Band) as the NEOZ Dance Team. They then won the show which allowed them to prepare for their debut as SF9, which they were renamed to in August.
On October 5, 2016, SF9 debuted with the release of their first single album "Feeling Sensation". On October 28, a Chinese version of their title track "Fanfare" from their debut single was released. On December 22, they released their first special digital single "So Beautiful".
SF9 came back on February 6, 2017, with the release of their first mini album Burning Sensation. On February 22, their second Chinese digital single "Still My Lady" was released, which was a song from their recently released first mini album. On April 18, they released their second mini album Breaking Sensation.
On May 2, SF9 released their third Chinese digital single "Easy Love", which was also a song from their first mini album. On June 7, they made their Japanese debut with the release of "Fanfare". The title track was previously pre-released on April 7 and is a Japanese version of their debut song "Fanfare".
On August 2, they released their second Japanese single "Easy Love". On October 12, SF9 came back with their third mini album Knights of the Sun. A Chinese version of the title track "O Sole Mio" on October 27.
In November 2017, SF9 held their tour 2017 SF9 Be My Fantasy in USA in a total of 3 cities: Dallas, Seattle, and Boston. On December 13, they released their first Japanese studio album Sensational Feeling Nine. On February 26, 2018, SF9 released their fourth mini album Mamma Mia!.
They released their fifth Chinese digital single "Mamma Mia! , a Chinese version from their fourth mini album, on April 27. On May 23, SF9 released their third Japanese single "Mamma Mia!
", which is from their fourth mini album. On July 31, they released their fifth mini album Sensuous. A Japanese version of their songs, "Now or Never" and "Photograph", from their fifth mini album was released in their fourth Japanese single "Now or Never".
On February 20, 2019, SF9 came back with the release of their sixth mini album Narcissus. They released their second Japanese studio album Illuminate on March 20. From April to May 2019, SF9 went on their USA and Europe tour 2019 SF9 USA·Europe Live Tour [Unlimited].
The tour was previously announced earlier in the year on February 28 On June 17, they released their seventh mini album RPM. Their Japanese single "RPM" was released on September 11, which includes songs from their seventh mini album. On January 7, 2020, SF9 released their first Korean studio album First Collection.
On June 17, their sixth Japanese single "Good Guy" was released which included Japanese versions of a few songs from their first Korean studio album. The single was initially planned to be released on April 15, but was then postponed to May 27 due to the coronavirus outbreak. It was then postponed again for the same reason, considering the safety of stores and customers would not be satisfying enough by May 27.
On July 6, they released their eighth mini album 9loryUs. On October 5, their first special album Special History Book was released to celebrate their fourth anniversary. On December 9, SF9 released their third Japanese studio album Golden Echo.
From April 1 to June 3, 2023, SF9 participated in the Mnet reality show Kingdom: Legendary War. Their participation was previously confirmed by Mnet on January 29. On July 5, SF9 came back with their ninth mini album Turn Over.
On November 22, they released their tenth mini album Rumination. On December 30, SF9 released the single "Savior" as the fifteenth release in the UNIVERSE Music project. On February 5, 2022, it was announced that In Seong would enlist in the military band on March 21.
