On November 5, 2019, G-EGG, a global idol development project, was officially launched with the aim to debut a Japan-Korea joint idol boy group in 2020. The project would be overseen by Yoonhak, leader and member of the boy group SUPERNOVA, who had been planning the project for about three years. He will also supervise the trainees that had been selected in Japan and Korea.
A TV broadcast was also planned to follow the process into the formation of the group. G-EGG aired its first episode on February 2, 2020. On August 29, 2020, the 11-member lineup was officially revealed after the final episode was postponed in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It was also revealed the group's fan club would be called "NIK ISLAND" and their fans would be called "NIKEE". NIK held their first event, an online mini talk, on September 29. During the countdown performance at NIK's live event "STARTING OVER -01" on December 31, 2020, it was announced that Taehoon, who had participated as a guest member, would officially join the group.
On March 26, NIK announced Sihyuk's withdrawal from the group after he was unable to reach a final agreement between the two parties. On September 27, 2021, NIK debuted in Korea with the single "Santa Monica / Universe". On October 6, 2021, the group debuted in Japan with the single "Universe / Santa Monica".
On August 22, 2022, it was announced that Fumiya had left the group after terminating his contract with ARGS Entertainment due to his mental and physical health, and that the group would reorganize as 10 members. On January 14, 2023, GH Entertainment announced that Gunmin would be enlisting for his mandatory military service as a public service worker starting on January 26. On June 30, it was announced that the group will be disbanding following the expiration of their contract in July 2023.
