On March 12, 2013, Box Media announced the debut of a new five member boy group, LU:KUS, consisting of Choi, Kyung Jin, Dong Hyun, Haewon, and Jinwan. Donghyun, Haewon, and Jinwan had previously been members of X-5 and signed exclusive contracts with Box Media following the group’s disbandment earlier that year. The group was scheduled to debut sometime in April or May of 2013.
After a year of inactivity, LU:KUS resumed preparations in June 2014. The group made its first public stage appearance at the 2014 Dream Concert. Media reports later described their upcoming debut as a joint project involving PAN Entertainment, following an unannounced label change from Box Media, the Danish production team GL Music, and producer Jimmy Richard, who had previously worked with artists such as Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers.
LU:KUS officially debuted on July 4, 2014, with the digital single "So Into U" under PAN Entertainment. Seven months later, on January 13, 2015, they made their first comeback with their second digital single "Break Ya". Following their comeback, the group spent the rest of the quarter promoting in Japan, where they performed a new track titled "Beautiful".
The track was eventually released on September 10 as their third digital single, "It's Beautiful", without any official domestic promotions. Two months later, on November 10, the group returned to Korea and re-released the single as "It's Beautiful (Short ver. )".
This time, their company properly announced the release as the group's official comeback and runned domestic promotions. On December 21, it was announced that the group would formally expand their activities by focusing future promotions on the Japanese market. On February 17, 2016, LU:KUS released their first Japanese single, "Break Ya".
The group actively promoted in Japan for the next two months. On April 26, 2016, media outlets reported that LU:KUS had disbanded following the termination of the members' contracts with PAN Entertainment due to military service issues. However, the following day, it was clarified that the group had not disbanded and would instead continue activities in Japan, supported by their Japanese label, HY Entertainment.
On April 30, 2016, HY Entertainment announced that the group would undergo a name change and begin activities as L. A. U, a name chosen by the five members.
The group then focused exclusively on Japan, promoting their previous single and new material under the new name. In July 2016, Korean news outlets officially reported the group's rebranding to L. A.
U and announced that the group had signed with a new Korean label, Lumiwell Korea. During this period, sneak peeks of a new song began appearing on L. A.
U's official Japanese social media accounts, and the group started performing it live at events. In August, the song was officially revealed as "She's Got Me", with a release date set for October 12 as L. A.

On December 26, it was announced that Jinwan had officially left the group due to personal reasons and medical conditions. The statement confirmed that the remaining trio would continue activities until Haewon completed his military service and that the group would resume promoting in South Korea after a year focused exclusively on Japan.
