Prior to SHU-I, Inseok and Changhyun were members of the pre-debut group R-eaL. After the group disbanded due to the agency's internal issues, Inseok and Changhyun auditioned for SHU-I. Changhyun later brought in Hyungjun, while Jinseok and Minho were recruited through auditions.
In April, the five members began preparing for their debut. On September 11, 2009, SHU-I debuted with their first digital single "Bomb Bomb Bomb". On November 13, the group resumed activities with the follow up song "Save Me", starting with their appearance on Music Bank the same day.
On November 28, 2010, they held a free solo event at the outdoor stage of Tokyo's Yoyogi Park. During the event, they announced plans for their upcoming indie mini album "Star Light", set for release on January 26, as well as their Japanese debut through on May 4 of the following year. In January 2011, they released the indie mini album Star Light, before making their Japanese major label debut with their first single "Smile for Me" in May 2011.
On July 25, 2012, they released their first Japanese studio album Nextage. On March 13, 2013, they released their sixth Japanese single album "Achakocha Sorry". On June 22, 2013 it was reported that SHU-I had recently returned to Korea and filmed a music video for their first Korean comeback in three years.
On July 10, the group returned with their first Korean mini album Don’t Back Down and the title track of the same name. On November 1, they released their second Korean digital single "So in LUV". The same day, Hyungjun announced that he would be enlisting in December with a handwritten message on SHU-I's official blog.
On August 15, 2015, SHU-I announced through their official Japanese website that they would disband by the end of the year, with Inseok, Changhyun and Minho to enlist in the military in 2016. A best album, Best, was released on November 25, 2015 and the group held their final tour, Ijo, SHU-I Deshita, from December 21 to 29, 2015.
