On April 17, 2017, MBK announced that they were preparing to debut a 10-member boy group, then tentatively known as IM66, with plans to introduce the group in the summer. The group was to initially consist of six members. However, as a result of discussions, MBK decided with 10 members to improve the group's completeness and present high-quality music.
On September 1, 2017, IM (as four) debuted with their first digital single album "Sad Story". The single was released under Yama&Hotchicks Entertainment. In October 2017, the group entered as contestants on KBS2's idol rebooting show The Unit, representing MBK Entertainment.
Kijung had placed 8th which made him a member of the project group UNB. UNB debuted on April 7, 2018 with their first mini album Boyhood and disbanded on January 27, 2019. In 2019, Hangyul participated in Mnet's boy group survival show Produce X 101, representing MBK.
He finished in 7th place, thus becoming a member of X1 with an exclusive 2-and-a-half years contract with the group. However, the group disbanded on January 6, 2020 due to the Produce 101 vote manipulation controversy. Hangyul later debuted as a member of PocketDol Studio's boy group BAE173 on November 19, 2020.
