On August 17, 2015, it was announced that veteran R&B singer would produce and debut his first girl group, named Unicorn. Press reports stated the group would debut the next month, first being introduced through a webtoon series titled I Am a Girl Group. In the days that followed, the group's members were gradually introduced as the main characters of each episode.
They were revealed in succession starting with Sally, followed by Rumi, Yujin, Gayoung and Winnie. Following this promotional series, the group's debut date was officially confirmed for September 3, with teasers being published on September 1. On September 3, 2015 Unicorn made their official debut with their first mini album Once Upon A Time.
Their debut stage on M Countdown happened later in the same day. In November, it was announced that the group would be featured as models for the web game 대황제. On July 25, 2016, it was announced that member Winnie had left the group in March of the same year due to health reasons.
Concurrently, it was announced that the group would return as a four-member unit later that week on the 28th with their second mini album. The next day, teasers for the comeback were posted on the group's social media. It was revealed that the then-upcoming release was a collaboration between Unicorn and ten other artists namely, photographer David Byun, choreographer Kwang Hoo, illustrators Sim Jae-hyung (SIMXART) and Chomongrong, art object designer Bell&Nouveau, fashion designer Park Yoon-hee, makeup artists Lee Ji-young and Hwang Hee-jung, hairstylist Kang Mi-hae, and jewelry designer Vaav.
They also announced the name of the then-upcoming mini-album as The Brand New Label, as part of the "Unicorn Plus" project. The group made their comeback on July 28 with their second mini album, Unicorn Plus - The Brand New Label. Due to the album's nature as a collaboration between ten artists, the group did not conduct their typical broadcast promotions for this release.
On September 7, it was announced that the group would hold their first solo concert in Japan later that month. Following the concert, the group entered a period of inactivity. Their activities gradually declined over the next few months, with their last official activity taking place in February 2017.
In the subsequent months, the members created personal social media accounts without mentioning the group. On September 6, 2017, member Rumi announced that the group had disbanded. - Yujin owns and operates her own clothing brand, Peniel.
- Rumi is presumed to have left the entertainment industry. - Gayoung and Sally both re-debuted as solo artists. - Now using the stage name Mauve, Gayoung debuted as a soloist on October 18, 2022, with the single "My Cat".
