On January 3, 2012, B2M Entertainment announced the then-upcoming debut of a five-member girl group named SPICA. The group consisted of Park Sihyun, Kim Boa, Park Narae, Yang Jiwon, and Kim Bohyung. Their connection to senior labelmate Lee Hyori, who was involved in their selection and training for approximately 1.
6 years, drew significant public attention alongside the individual backgrounds of the members. On January 9, 2012, SPICA released their pre-debut digital single "Doggedly. " The song gained further attention for featuring Lee Hyori in its music video.
On February 8, SPICA officially debuted with their first mini album, Russian Roulette. However, the song's lyrics and choreography faced backlash for sensitive themes, including references to suicide, and were required to be revised. As a result, SPICA's debut on music shows was delayed by two days.
On March 29, they released a repackaged version of their debut mini-album, titled Painkiller, which included the new title track "Painkiller". On September 19, following a period of teasers and dating rumors involving member Bohyung and singer Jeon Jin, SPICA made their comeback with the digital single "I'll Be There". On November 21, the group released their second mini album, Lonely, and began music show promotions on November 23.
In early 2013, the group appeared on Lee Hyori's X Unnie, seeking Lee Hyori's help for their then-upcoming comeback. After the show, they were selected as Hyori's juniors and entered a training period, with the announcement that Hyori and her husband would oversee their next two releases. As a result, Lee Hyori and her husband collaborated closely with SPICA and took charge of producing the group's subsequent two releases.
On August 28, SPICA released their third digital single, "Tonight". On January 27, 2014, the group released their fourth digital single "You Don't Love Me" On August 1, SPICA announced a partnership with Billboard for the release of their first English single, "I Did It". The single was released on August 7 and premiered at KCON in Los Angeles.
The following day, an interview revealed plans for SPICA to release a full-length American album. However, these plans were presumably cancelled and abandoned after the group's return to Korea without further updates, leaving the project unreleased. On September 1, B2M Entertainment announced that SPICA would subsequently make separate comebacks as a sub-unit and with a solo release.
SPICA's first sub-unit, SPICA. S, consisting of members Park Sihyun, Park Narae, Yang Jiwon and Kim Bohyung, debuted with the digital single "Give Your Love" on September 12. Concurrently, the remaining member, Kim Boa, prepared a solo project to continue the group's activities.
On November 5, SPICA released their first special single, "Ghost". The accompanying teaser showcased the group's backstage runway rehearsal at Seoul Fashion Week and clips from the music video shoot. Notably, their agency stated that SPICA would not promote the track on music programs, describing the release specifically as "a fall gift to their fans.
" In 2015, SPICA members primarily focused on solo activities. Their only official group release was the OST "Because of You" for the television drama Super Daddy Yeol in March. On December 23, it was reported that the group had signed an exclusive contract with CJ E&M Music, having parted ways with their former agency, B2M Entertainment.
On February 10, 2016, it was announced that SPICA would make their comeback with a mini album in April. However, the comeback was subsequently delayed and then canceled without further announcement.
