In 2020, Rainbow Company (later known as Rainbow E&M) created Future Idol, an idol development project for the purpose of debuting various project idol groups throughout 2021, 2022 and 2023 through its project, known as 'Future Idol Asia'. While pre-debut, Peony was one of several teen groups that participated in the third Future Idol showcase, as a seven-member group. Sometime after the showcase, Haeun had left the group and was unable to make her debut with them.
On November 16, 2023, a teaser of "Checkmate" was released, confirming their debut. They then released their debut single "Checkmate" on November 24.
