NEKIRU was formed sometime in early 2019 by To Hermitage, with members Nyaryu, Soha and Yume. They officially made their debut on April 27, 2019 with a live stage performance at the Hometiger Festival in Shinchon, Mapo, Seoul. On June 23, 2020, NEKIRU announced their first music release, the mini album HELLO with lead song "Hear My Voice".
However, a few days later, member Yume announced her graduation from the group due to health issues. The album was eventually released on November 13, 2020. Since, member Yume was still a member while the album in preparation, her vocals are present in the album.
On December 24, 2020, member Ria's graduation was announced, she credited her departure to difficulties with working as both a member of NEKIRU and Red Sonnet, and thus ultimately chose to remain with Red Sonnet. On June 23, NEKIRU teased a new music release. By July 14, they revealed a mini album, titled The Forgotten Star set to be released on August 22.
The album released early online on August 4. On March 28, 2025, To Hermitage announced that they have been acquired by SooSo Entertainment and thus NEKIRU will be transferred to the new agency.
