In November 2021, MLD Entertainment's audition pages introduced Nonaka Shana, a contestant from Girls Planet 999, and Chantal Videla, a Filipino-Argentine actress, as trainees for their upcoming girl group. In December, the two began to host a web series on Nadol TV called ChanShaWorld. On May 16, 2022, MLD Entertainment officially announced that their upcoming girl group Lapillus is set to debut in June and confirmed that Shana and Chanty would be in the lineup.
The same day, the group's official SNS accounts were opened. On May 23, 2022, a Naver article was published, confirming that the group would debut with six members on June 20. That same day, they revealed the profile pictures of the first two members Shana and Haeun.
On May 24, they revealed the profile pictures of the next two members Seowon and Yue, and on May 25, they revealed the profile pictures of the final two members Bessie and Chanty. On June 9, 2022, it was reported by Edaily that the group would debut with the digital single "Hit Ya! ".
The single, along with its accompanying video, were released on June 20. The group then held their debut music stage on June 23 on M Countdown. On August 31, 2022, it was announced that Lapillus would be making their first comeback with "Gratata" on September 22.
On September 11, 2022, it was confirmed that the group would be releasing their first mini album Girl's Round Part. 1 on the 22nd. On October 21, 2022, MLD Entertainment announced the official fandom name as "LAPIS".
The meaning behind is "A Gem meets another gem then they can shine even brighter" Just like when Lapillus and Lapis met, they've shine even brighter. On June 7, the group dropped a coming soon teaser for their second mini album, Girl's Round Part. 2, set for release on June 21.
On June 10, the group announced their plans to make their Japanese debut with their first single, "Who's Next (Japanese Ver. )" on August 2. On August 17, 2023, Lapllius announced that they would be releasing "Ulala (Spanish Ver.
)" on August 18. On April 5, MLD Entertainment released a statement which revealed that group member Chanty would take an indefinite hiatus from activities for the time being after being diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome.
