On July 25, 2022, JYP Entertainment uploaded an announcement video with chairman Park Jin Young and founder and CEO . They revealed the dates of auditions for the America2Korea project, which aim for the creation of the next "Global Super Girl Group". The selected participants will train at JYP in Korea and the final members chosen will debut in the United States, while the girl group will partner with both JYP Entertainment and Republic Records for all music releases.
On June 29, 2023, JYP posted the first teaser for the show which will premiere on July 13. The group's name was announced as VCHA during the show's final episode on September 22, alongside the reveal of the six winning contestants and the release of their first pre-debut digital single "SeVit (New Light)"; VCHA made their first public performance on Music Bank with this song on the same day. Following A2K’s three-month bootcamp in Los Angeles, they completed approximately five months of training at JYPE’s Seoul headquarters in preparation for their debut.
Their second pre-debut digital single, "Ready for the World", originally the A2K theme song, was released on December 1, 2023. On January 1, 2024, JYP Entertainment announced that VCHA will debut with the digital single "Girls of the Year" on January 26. Along with this release, on January 26, during the group's debut livestream on YouTube, it was announced that their fandom name would be "VLIGHT".
On March 1, the group released a teaser for their second digital single "Only One", set for release on March 15. On March 11, it was announced that Kaylee will be on hiatus due to a health condition till further notice. On December 7, KG announced via her Instagram story that she had decided to leave VCHA after filing a lawsuit against JYP Entertainment.
On December 8, 2024, JYP USA announced that the group would be going on an indefinite hiatus due to the ongoing dispute with member KG. On July 12, 2025, Kaylee announced via an Instagram post that she has left VCHA and JYP Entertainment. On August 7, JYP Entertainment announced that the four remaining members would be rebranding under the name GIRLSET.
A teaser film was uploaded that same day on their YouTube channel. Later the same day, GIRLSET announced the digital single "Commas", set for release on August 29. On October 30, it was announced that they will be releasing their second single "Little Miss" on November 14.
On February 10, 2026, it was announced that GIRLSET will be releasing their third single "Tweak" on March 6. On February 25, the group issued an announcement across all social media accounts inviting fans to submit suggestions for the group’s new official fandom name. On March 6, it was announced that various versions of the song "Tweak" would be available to download exclusively on iTunes, including its instrumental, Yung Bae Remix, Spanish version, acapella and piano version, between March 6 and 8.
Due to high demand, the five alternative versions were made available through the remix single "Tweak (Singles)" on March 9. On March 7, GIRLSET confirmed that the selected fandom name would be "LOCKETS".
